Its Official. I’m Running for Deputy Reeve of Loyalist Township

My name is Joy Silver and I am running for the Deputy Reeve of Loyalist Township in the 2010 elections.

Why would I want to run for Deputy Reeve?

There are several reasons!

I was born and raised in Loyalist Township. I understand our community. I can make it a better place to live. I can make a difference

I also question how the Township is being run with the average person having little or no say in the way our local Government is operated or managed.

For example, the passing of By-Law 2008-100 that outlawed the use of ATV’s and snowmobiles on any public road, sidewalk, trail system, park anywhere in Loyalist Township has never been clearly explained by our elected officials.

I think this bylaw is unfair and ridiculous in a largely rural area like Loyalist Township, where hundreds of residents have safely enjoyed and operated their ATV’s and snow mobiles for years.

I don’t understand why this bylaw was passed in the first place! Why weren’t the voters of Loyalist Township consulted? Why were they kept in the dark?

I think all Township officials should be accountable to the tax payers and not be difficult to approach.

Local Government should never be “business as usual” when there are people involved.

Who is Joy Silver?

I never set out to be a politician. Indeed, I grew up on a local cattle farm with lots of siblings and as a child I enjoyed riding horses and singing country gospel for our church. I attended Morven, Odessa, and Bath Public Schools and later Ernestown High School and St. Lawrence College in Kingston.

I own or have owned several properties in the Township over the last 25 years so I know what it is like to pay ever-increasing property taxes while getting less and less Township services.

I am also active in business on a local level. I own Joy’s Hair Salon and Wellness Company in Bath, which is located in a historic, 150-year old building in the heart of the village. Besides the hair salon, I am also a Director in an Internet-based natural health and wellness company in Canada and United States.

My small business experience has helped me understand the real needs of other local small businesses, which are so important to the economic health of our community.

I also know my around a computer. I understand the importance of technology in today’s world and believe that all our Township leaders should take advantage of this critical communications asset.

I am a strong believer in protecting our environment. Its very important to me. I want to keep our air clean and our water safe. I also want everyone to enjoy our parks and recreation areas for many years to come.

What are my credentials and political experience?

I have spent the last three and a half years going to Township meetings. I follow the details of the issues, especially the all-important budget.

I have also been involved in various local projects on a volunteer basis.

•    I am currently the President of Bath’s Canada Day Celebrations, an event enjoyed by thousands every year and the oldest event of its kind in Canada. Last year was very successful and we won Lennox and Addington County’s Economic Development achievement award for Tourism Event of the Year.
•    I also serve on the Loyalist Township Recreation Advisory Committee looking after all the parks in the Township as well as the Henderson Arena in Amherstview.
•    I am also a member of Bath’s Revitalization Committee and we have received a $190,000 grant from the Provincial Government to improve the park and downtown core of Bath’s Business Section.
•    In January 2007, I spearheaded the successful campaign for a new boat ramp in Bath.
•    Every year during Earth Week, I help organize the Pitch In Clean Up program in Bath. I enjoy working with Bath Public School students, Girl Guides and local residents to make sure Bath is the Cleanest Village in Canada.

As Deputy Reeve, I feel I would be a good asset to the community, especially with my lifelong association with Loyalist Township.

Please vote for me this October 25th if you want a voice in local politics. Please vote for me if you want to freeze our municipal taxes while making sure we don’t lose any more services. Please vote for me if you care about the future of Loyalist Township.

Thank-you

Joy
